COMMON NIGHTS

6/18-7/29 2021

Opening Reception: 6/18 6-9pm

Cleo the Gallery is pleased to present ‘Common Nights’ with work by Anna Brancaccio, Cate Buhler and Tyriq Maxwell. This exhibition is a study in domestic setting: the objects and architecture that can define nesting in a space.

Anna Brancaccio and Cate Buhler frequently collaborate under the collective ‘abcb’. For this show they created 5 new pieces in response to common accents in domestic spaces that thicken with new layers of information as you live with them and personalize them. A majority of the raw material for these works were collected from the studio of Robert Guillot, a famous artist who has since passed. As an ode to their relationship with his work and their own collective identity, both artists were able to find ways to reconfigure and embellish these personal effects to add more information in a low-tech, hands-on fashion. This is to say that after comfortably fabricating objects in the past with 3D printing, both Brancaccio and Buhler took on manual manipulation for this new body of work, with the exception being ‘The Odalisque’ pointcloud: a portrait that Anna took of Cate in 2016. This print along with the warm lighting found from the two lamps, the personal mirror and the decorative stool all share in the intimate / platonic boudoir they set out to create.

To complement this collection there are two works present by Tyriq Maxwell. These paintings cull inspiration from severe architecture and showcase geometric precision. They are bathed in warm colors tonaly to soften these spaces as though they are a study in memory rather than physical construction.
