Cleo the Gallery is pleased to present Greetings From Coastal Georgia with work by artist Nathaniel Thompson.

“My work investigates the mundane, tradition, dilapidation, and transformation. The subject matter is predominately that of everyday architecture whose surfaces reveal the effects of time: houses begin to crumble, road signs decompose, and fencing no longer shares its links. Yet, within that decay, traces of culture and humanity break through.

This set of photographs present a nuanced meditation of the tension between tradition and decay that illustrate my own complicated relationship with the contemporary American South. They reveal a place in time as it grapples with the past and clings to tradition while the world is propelled into the future. The scenes express a frustration within the rigid architecture and presentation of decay, yet there exists compassion as well. It is that same very culture preserved inside my photographs that make them relatable and human.”

Nathaniel Thompson (b. 1997) was born in Thailand and currently resides in Savannah, Georgia. He is a multidisciplinary artist who specializes in photography and documentation, primarily using vintage and analog devices such as 35mm & 120mm film, instant film, early 2000’s digital cameras, and other alternative processes. Along with photography, Thompson incorporates found photos, objects, and other cultural remnants into interactive installation pieces. Acting as an archaeologist, he digs through ephemera to reclaim lost and forgotten ways of life and translates them into immersive and interactive environments. Thompson’s intention is accessibility in artwork and dissolving barriers between the artwork and the viewer. Finding inspiration from living in Southern America, road trips, and urban exploration, he channels these inspirations to explore themes such as daily life, transformation, and the relationship between past and present.
